21st August 1999 - Musselburgh, Away

Following an impressive all-round performance, Westquarter consigned bottom club Musselburgh to a comprehensive 156 run defeat at Lewisvale on Saturday.
A briefly entertaining cameo was provided by Dougie Blakeley subsequent to the visitors losing the toss, but he succumbed to the cleverly set deep square leg trap for 13, Alan Sutherland had the misfortune to deflect a poorly directed delivery on to his leg stump and, when Crawford Churchill was caught behind off Glazier for 13 Westquarter were 71 for three in the 24th over.

Meanwhile, a comparatively subdued Rab Sutton had been accumulating runs before his brother Steve joined him at the crease. No further wickets were to fall as the brothers launched an assault on the home attack. Four sixes and ten fours sped Rab towards the century mark and when, much to the delight of his team mates, he reached the three figure milestone in the 45th over, Sharp was prompted to declare. Steve Sutton amassed six boundaries in an unbeaten 47 that was instrumental in hoisting the total of 209 for three.

When the home side came to the crease, opening batsman MacDonald did not relish the pace of Angus and was caught by Colin Churchill.

As wickets tumbled around him, Glazier sensed a window of opportunity to top score for the home side, and was in the frame until bowled by the majestic Angus. The introduction of Colin Churchill and Steve Sutton yielded four cheap wickets, the most curious of which was undoubtedly that of opener Colin Miller. Miller scored five runs in 36 overs. When he finally decided to attempt an attacking shot, he was caught and bowled to become the 9th man out with the score on 52.

At this juncture last "man" Jo Coventry arrived in the middle. Putting some of her male colleagues to shame with a refreshing array of positive strokes, she was unlucky to be run out after tripping on the turn for a second run. The East Lothian side had subsided to 53 all out in the 38th over.

With one round of league fixtures left, Westquarter remain tantalisingly close to leaders Dunfermline Carnegie. Unfortunately even assuming the Bailliefields men win away to Drummond, it would require a minor miracle for the Fife side to falter against lowly Old Contemptibles and thereby hand the Division 3 title to Westquarter.

Result: Westquarter 209 for three declared (RA Sutton 100no, SM Sutton 47no) 25 points; Musselburgh 53 all out (RS Angus four for 21, SM Sutton two for 1, CS Churchill two for 12) 2 points.
